4 Checks to Spot a Good Roller Shutter Garage Door

by Robert Mitchelle

It'd be hard to dispute how efficient and useful a rolling garage door can be.  Not only does it save you space inside the garage, but it will also save space on your drive, as you won't need to swing open your garage door to access it—and it's also just plain convenient.  Many households across Australia are choosing to make the switch over.  However, as the market grows, it gets more and more important to know that you're purchasing a quality product.  Here are four things you can check to be sure that the door you're purchasing is top-notch quality.

Does it meet Australian wind load requirements?

In order to ensure it will be safe in all weathers, your door should meet standard AS/NZS 4505:2012.  This is technically only applicable to Cyclone Category Areas C and D, but if the manufacturer of your door has checked its product meets these requirements, that's certainly a sign of a strong, high-quality product.

Is it secure at the bottom?

A weak roller door may be accessible by vandals or thieves at the very bottom.  A good-quality door should be reinforced in this area so as not to allow access.  Ask the company you've contacted about how it's reinforced for security in this area.  If it's not, consider finding a different product.

What safety features is it fitted with?

As an extremely heavy piece of equipment, a misused roller door could be dangerous.  In order to negate this risk, good doors are fitted with safety features to prevent them closing on people, pets, or anything else—and this is something you should look for.  Equally, the Australian Garage Door Association (AGDA) recommends choosing a door with an infrared sensor.  It's worth asking whether your door will have this feature.

Are there safety labels on or nearby the door?

Every rolling garage door should feature such labels, as dictated by standard AS/NZ 4505:1998.  You can find information about these specific labels on the AGDA website—but so long as there is some form of warning sticker or label around the product, advising caution with children around the door, it is likely to be compliant.

If the door meets these four checks, chances are that you're looking at an excellent product that you're perfectly safe to buy.  If not, you may need to consider finding another supplier.  The door may be cheaper, but a quality door is much safer and will last you much longer too.
