Tips When Remodelling a Small Bathroom

by Robert Mitchelle

Most home bathrooms aren't palatial. Many can be cramped and be limited in terms of space. You can address this situation when renovating by choosing design options to open up the area. Here are several tips.

Tile Size

Much of the bathroom's surface is covered with tiles, so you need to consider their size. Larger tiles won't leave so many join lines on the walls and the floor, which will look sleeker as a result.

Large rectangular tiles allow you to create parallel lines on the walls to make the bathroom seem bigger. For example, you could set them vertically to create a series of H patterns. The vertical emphasis will visually push the ceiling upward, making it appear taller. Striped wallpaper has a similar effect. Alternatively, lay large rectangular tiles horizontally, which will give the impression that the walls extend farther to the side.

Colours

Light, neutral colours will help to create a calm atmosphere as opposed to a crowded, cramped space. For example, opt for cream, beige, or grey. You can add appeal with the natural variations of textures in stone, such as travertine. Ceramic tiles can show one hue, or they can mimic the natural blends of rock. Neutral colours on the flooring won't draw attention to the smallness of its surface area. Conversely, patterned floors can make you notice how small they are.

Skylights

A room with ample daylight will tend to feel larger than a dark space. One way to bring more brightness inside is to install a skylight. Because these openings break up the solid block of the ceiling and let you see into the distance of the sky, the room will seem more airy and open. A skylight will also protect your bathroom's privacy because no one will be gazing in from above your roof.

Reflective and Transparent Surfaces

Glossy surfaces like ceramic or marble tiles bounce light around a bathroom so that it will feel larger. Shiny chrome and glass shower screens also help. On the other hand, matte materials absorb light, so they'll darken the room somewhat, especially if they're deeper in colour.

If you want to maintain an open feel during bathroom remodelling, install glass shower screens that let you see into the enclosure. In doing so, they don't segment the room into zones. Conversely, shower curtains block the view, and the remaining visible area will feel smaller. Choose frameless screens for the most spacious effect.
