Three Questions That Will Help You Design Your Dream Kitchen

by Robert Mitchelle

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and for new homeowners, it's often the first priority for a renovation. If you've got the opportunity to take creative control of the renovation of your kitchen, you probably have some questions about it, particularly if this isn't something you've done before. The good news is that it doesn't need to be difficult or overwhelming; with a little thought and some help from the experts, you'll have the kitchen of your dreams planned out in no time.

#1: How would you like to use your kitchen?

A kitchen renovation is an ideal time to get a little aspirational. Would you like to spend more time baking with your children, or creating elaborate dinner parties for friends? Do you daydream of being able to keep your countertops clear, or have gadgets you wish you used more often? Write all these hopes down—they're a vital part of the process. After all, to create your dream kitchen, you have to know what your kitchen dreams are!

#2: How do you actually use your kitchen?

Of course, you also need to be realistic. If a lot of your kitchen use consists of grabbing a five-minute meal before running out again, add that to the list—you'll want easy storage for quick ingredients, and a decent microwave. If you have a pet and tend to buy pet food in bulk, factor in a place to keep the big sacks of kibble. You want your kitchen to work for you, not some aspirational imaginary version of yourself.

#3: What practical considerations do you need to take into account?

Once you've got a basic set of ideas laid down, it's time to look into your constraints. What are the measurements of the room? Where are the gas pipes, water pipes and plug sockets? How much light will it get, and where might you need a little extra illumination as you work? Many of these things can be changed, but it's usually much more cost-effective to work with them rather than having them altered, so figuring them out is a good place to start.

It really is that simple; those three questions will tell you everything you need to know before you get in touch with a kitchen design firm or a local builder to begin the process. Go into your initial consultation with these notes in mind, and you'll find it much easier to come out with a set of plans you'll love for years to come!
