Maintaining Outdoor Furniture: 3 Tips

by Robert Mitchelle

Just because your furniture is outdoors doesn't mean it's exempt from a little maintenance and care now and then. In fact, taking care of your outdoor furniture can be more challenging than indoor pieces since they're constantly exposed to the elements. But with a little bit of care and attention, you can keep your outdoor furniture looking great for seasons to come. Here are 3 tips for maintaining outdoor furniture.

1. Keep it clean

You can extend the lifespan of your outdoor furniture by regularly cleaning it. Depending on the material, you may be able to use soap and water or a mild cleaner; be sure to check the manufacturer's instructions first. You can try a power washer for tougher stains but use it on the lowest power setting to avoid damaging the finish or material. And always rinse off any cleaner completely before it has a chance to dry. In addition, make sure to clean any cushions or pillows that are part of your set; these can be removed and washed according to the care instructions. By taking a few simple steps, you can keep your outdoor furniture looking great for years to come.

2. Cover it up

As any homeowner knows, bad weather can wreak havoc on outdoor furniture. Rain and snow can cause wood to warp and metal to rust, while strong winds can topple decorative items and patio umbrellas. Even sunlight can fade fabrics and cause plastics to become brittle. To help protect your furniture from the elements, it's a good idea to invest in some covers. Tarps or plastic sheets are ideal for covering large pieces like tables and chairs, while smaller items like cushions can be stored inside your home or in a waterproof container when not in use.

3. Protect the finish

To help wooden outdoor furniture withstand the elements, you need to protect the finish with a sealant or topcoat specifically designed for outdoor use. Apply the sealant by carefully following the manufacturer's instructions for the best results. If your furniture doesn't have a sealant applied, it will start to show any wear much quicker, so this is an important step in maintaining its appearance. In addition to using a sealant, avoid placing hot items directly onto wood surfaces, as this will cause discolouration or warping over time.
